Translation from Spanish

The Spanish language belongs to the Roman group (which also includes such languages as French, Italian, Portuguese and others). The Spanish language developed from Latin, which was wide-spread in Iberian Peninsula because of the Roman invasion. Later, in the 5th century, there was an invasion of the Germanic tribes to Spain, but their language influence was not significant. In the 8th century, after the Moorish Conquest, The Arabic language influenced languages existing in Iberian Peninsula.

The Spanish language adopted a lot of words from other languages and developed some new words as well.

Because of the expansion of the Spanish Empire in 15th -19th centuries, the Spanish language become wide-spread in the Americas and Asia Pacific.

Nowadays, more than 350 million people speak Spanish as a mother tongue, and about 100 million can speak it as a second language. The Spanish language has the 2nd biggest number of native speakers in the world (after Mandarin Chinese). Most of the Spanish speakers live in Mexico. Spanish is the 3rd (after Chinese and English) most spoken language in the world.

The Spanish language has a high official status and is one of the six languages used by UNO. It is also in official use by different international organizations, such as the European Union, the Latin Union, the Union of South American Nations, the Organization of American States and some others.

The Spanish language is also known by the word “castellano”. This term is used to differentiate it from other languages spoken in Spain. Castellano, according to the Constitution of 1978, is the official language of Spain, but there are also some other languages, which have local importance: Catalan, Basque, Galician.

If you have a look at the map showing the expansion of the Spanish language in the world, you will see that most of the Spanish speakers live in Latin America.
