Translation from Spanish to English
Sometimes the Spanish to English translation is needed by the clients from non English-speaking and non Spanish-speaking countries. In this case the customers can get confused as they have never probably ordered a direct translation from one foreign language to another. It goes without saying that translating it with an intermediate language will do little sense as it will be twice more expensive, twice longer and the probability of getting a wrong translation will be higher. However, most of the translation agencies don't take such orders and only work with the language pairs including the native language of the country they are based at. Contacting a foreign translation agency also produces a lot of troubles: problems of long-distant communication, high mailing cost, the necessity for a client to speak to or write to a foreigner, time difference, service payment problems. That's why it can be rather difficult for a client to order a direct translation from one foreign language to another.
However, “Express” translation agency is ready to offer you direct translation service from Spanish to English. In Russia, as you know, all the translators with higher education speak two foreign languages and in our agency we work with some who are trained in Spanish and English. Normally they translate from Spanish or English to Russian, but they are also qualified for doing such direct translations.
Now we would like to discuss some common mistakes made by the Spanish to English translators and caused by the structural differences of the languages.
A great problem for an inattentive translator comes from the so-called “False cognates” - similar Spanish and French words having a different meaning. For example, Spanish word “embarazada” has nothing to do with the English word “embarrassed”. The Spanish word means “pregnant”, so don't confuse! The Spanish word “éxito” means “success” and shouldn't be confused with “exit” in English. Sometimes the meaning of such false cognates is similar but differs stylistically or customary. The category of gender (as it is absent in many languages) also creates problems for the Spanish to English translators. The word order in Spanish differs from the English word order (it is more free in Spanish and sentences can start with the subject, the verb or the object) and even though it doesn't usually make the translation erroneous, the translated sentence may sound awkward and unnatural because of that. Other common translational problems come from the subjunctive mood, mis-usage of words with prepositions, translation of reflexive verbs and loan translation.
The specialists with whom we have honor to work won't agree that Spanish to English translation is so challenging. They will assure you with their translation that reading a translated text can be just as easy and enjoyable, as reading an original. Our task is to make you forget that the language barrier ever existed.
